Lhasa – Gyantse – Shingatse – Xegar – Zhangmu

Itinerary
Day 01: Arrive Lhasa

Arrive Lhasa. Lhasa at an altitude of 3,650 mt, is situated on the north bank of Kyichu River. Lhasa in Tibetan means "Place of the Gods", the residence of the Dalai Lama. Upon arrival you will be met by our representative and transferred to your hotel (60 km). Upon arrival, check into your hotel.
Rest of the day is at your leisure to acclimatize.

Day 02: Lhasa

After breakfast proceed for full day sightseeing of Potala Palace, Ramoche Monastery and Norbulinka. Potala Palace, is legendary Palace built atop a single hill is synonymous with Tibet by the first foremost king Songtsen Gompa. Norbulingka means 'Treasure Park' covers an area of around 360,000 sq. mts. and is considered to be the biggest man made garden in Tibet.

Day 03: Lhasa
After breakfast full day sightseeing of Sera Monastery, Jokhang Monastery and Barkhor Market. Sera Monastery is 5 Kms north of Lhasa, Sera setting is one of Lhasa's prettiest monasteries. Once a community of more than 5,000 monks resided here and was virtually extinguished by the Chinese. Jokhang Temple, situated in the heart of Old Lhasa, it houses Tibet's most precious religious relic, a golden Shakyamuni Buddha which was brought as a gift by the Chinese Princess Wen Cheng on the occasion of her wedding to the Tibetan King, Songtsen Gompo. Barkhor Market place, which is the religious and social focus of Lhasa.

Day 04: Lhasa – Gyantse

Gyantse lies 260kms southwest of Lhasa on the Northern bank of Nyang Chu River. It takes around 8 hours to reach Gyantse crossing the Kamba La Pass (4800m) where the beautiful Yamdrok Tso will be seen and the Karo La Pass (5010m) where the year-around glacier will be seen. Gyantse has been known as a heroic town since Tibetans resisted the Young husband’s British Expedition to Tibet in 1904. Phalkor monastery was built in the 15th century by the local chieftain Ramtan Kasom under the guidance of the first Panchan lama.

Gyantse is a small town south west of Lhasa. It is one of the few places where the Chinese have not changed much. Gyantse is known because of its Fortress, the Dzong, a very special building, the Kimbum, and a monastery. In Gyantse sightseeing of Kumbum Stupa & Phalkor Monastery. A little further down the road is a wall build around a monastery and a strange building called the Kumbum. The monastery is called Pelkor Chode. It was founded in 1418. Formally there were a number of monasteries inside the walls but today there is just one left. It is visited by Gelugpa monks. The Kumbum is a building with a strange form. Inside it is even more strange because on the first 4 floors there are rooms that are only on 1 floor but also rooms that extend over 2 floors. Inside you can find a large number of statues. In the gallery of pictures attached to this page you can see a number of the thousand statues.

Day 05: Gyantse – Shingatse

Morning drive to Shigatse. Shigaste is Tibet's 2nd most important city. Upon arrival, check into hotel.
Later sightseeing of Tashilunpo Monastery. Tashilunpo Monastery was founded in 1447 and is the largest Yellow Hat sect monastery in Tibet. Tashilunpo was the seat of the Panchen Lamas. Tashilunpo contains chortens, temples and the Panchen Lama's palace. At its peak, Tashilunpo had more than 4,000 monks in its 4 monasteries.
Later proceed for sightseeing of flee-market.

Day 06: Shingatse – Xegar

Drive to Xegar via Sakya monastery covering a distance of 250 kms. Sakya monastery is located in the Zhongqu River valley about 30kms away from the Sino-Nepal Highway (Sakya-bridge). Upon arrival, check into the hotel.

Day 07: Xegar – Zhangmu

Today we drive to the highest plateau of the world with the typical view of Tibetan landscape, crossing over Nyalam Pass (3,800 m) and Lalung-La (Pass) at 5,050 m, with views of beautiful Himalayan Ranges panorama including the Mt. Everest (8,848 m) to Zhangmu (244 Kms).

Also called "new tingri", is surrounded by mountains, Zhangmu is another town that lies in the shadow of a great fortress.  Even in ruins it is majestic.  Seeming to grow out of the craggy brown rock, its sinous wall bristles with watchtowers like stegosaurus spines.  Isolated in 1855 by Nepalese in search of booty, the Gurkhas cut off the Dzong's water supply and settled in for a long siege.

Day 08: Zhangmu – Onward Destination

Depart Zhangmu for onward destination.
